Specification

How La Roche-Posay is supplied

Format availability is allocation-dependent, so the exact specification always travels on the pro-forma invoice rather than being fixed on a web page. Tell us the destination and the label rule you work to, and we confirm which market version is on offer before you commit.

Anthelios is a regulatory question before it is a seasonal one

Sun care is the one family on this brand that cannot be planned on volume alone, because sunscreen is not the same kind of product in every jurisdiction. Inside the European Union a sun protection product is a cosmetic, and European practice follows a Commission recommendation on efficacy and labelling: protection stated in categories from low to very high alongside the SPF figure, a minimum relationship between UVA and UVB protection marked by the UVA symbol inside a circle, and no claims of total or all-day protection. That framework is what a European Anthelios pack is printed to.

Cross an ocean and the classification moves. In the United States sunscreens are regulated as over-the-counter medicines with their own labelling regime and drug facts presentation, not as cosmetics. In Australia primary sunscreens fall under therapeutic goods regulation. Other markets sit somewhere between, some accepting European packs as presented, some requiring local-language particulars, some requiring the product or the importing company to be registered before release. The consequence for a buyer is unglamorous but decisive: a European sunscreen pack does not become a compliant article in a drug-regime market by adding a sticker, and no wholesaler can make it one. Establish what your destination treats sun care as before you fix volumes on it. That assessment, and any registration behind it, belongs to the importer of record; what we do is state plainly which market version and label set the offered allocation carries.

The calendar that follows from that

Once the regulatory position is settled, sun care behaves like every other seasonal line and punishes lateness. Demand at destination builds ahead of the local summer rather than during it, so the goods that fill a shelf in season were committed a long way before it. Northern-hemisphere buyers pull the ordering window into the early part of the year and compete for the same allocation at the same moment. Southern-hemisphere destinations invert the calendar, which makes counter-season allocation considerably easier to secure. Equatorial and Gulf markets run flatter and longer, and are planned as a standing line rather than a peak.

Tell us the season you are buying for rather than the month you want the goods on the water, and the loading window can be worked backwards from it. Sun care that lands after the peak does not simply sell later; it sits through a cycle, which is a dating problem as well as a cash-flow one.

Assort by range, because the fixture is built by range

First-time buyers tend to build an order from a spreadsheet of individual references. The channel does not merchandise that way. The shopper recognises the range before any single reference, the counter staff recommend by range, and a bay that carries three references out of a family reads as a gap rather than a selection. So the real decision is which segments of the shelf you intend to own.

  • Effaclar — the highest-rotation family in most markets, and usually the opening listing
  • Cicaplast — a small family with a disproportionate reorder rate
  • Toleriane — daily cleansing and care for the sensitive-skin segment
  • Lipikar — larger body formats, and where most of the pallet weight sits
  • Anthelios — sun care, seasonal, and the family that needs the earliest decision

Weight and volume follow that choice more than they follow the invoice value. A Lipikar-led order reaches a pallet's weight allowance while there is still height available; an Effaclar and Cicaplast order fills the space and leaves the payload alone. Neither is wrong, but they are quoted differently, and the split has to be fixed before a pro-forma so the loading plan and the costing describe the same shipment.

Who buys it, and in what shape

Pharmacy buying is broad and shallow with short reorder cycles, which is the opposite of a grocery order and produces a different pallet. An independent pharmacy takes case quantities through a regional distributor. A pharmacy chain or parapharmacy group buys pallets centrally and expects the range to be present rather than the two bestsellers. A clinic-facing distributor buys narrow and deep on a couple of families. All three are quotable, and what separates them is not the price per case but how the load is assembled and how often it repeats.

Beauty retail and marketplace buyers list the brand on a different logic again, favouring the families with independent search demand and least dependence on counter recommendation. If your channel sits closer to mass retail than to the counter, it is worth costing a mass-distributed line beside it in the same enquiry; buyers planning a full dermo-cosmetic bay generally put Vichy on the same booking, since the two ranges complement rather than compete and one arrival is easier to check in than two.

French manufacture and what it does for origin

Production for the European market runs out of France, and what we offer is EU-market stock purchased inside the Union and held in the manufacturer's sealed packaging. That matters at the border rather than on the shelf. Preferential origin follows where goods were made, so European manufacture is what allows a EUR.1 movement certificate to be issued where the destination holds a preferential agreement with the EU and the consignment qualifies; where it does not, a Certificate of Origin travels instead. The distinction is worth confirming before you build a landed cost, because a duty rate assumed and a duty rate evidenced are different numbers.

The rest of the file is standard — commercial invoice, packing list, export declaration and transport document — and the batch references belonging to your specific allocation are printed on both the pro-forma and the packing list, which lets provenance and dating be checked at every handover rather than accepted on somebody's word. We claim no appointment or exclusivity from the brand owner. We are an independent distributor of genuine EU-sourced stock, which is precisely why the verifiable things are put in writing.

Terms, ports and fixing the order

Goods load from Madrid. EXW here is the seller's premises rather than a port, a distinction that catches buyers who expect a quayside handover, and beyond it we trade FOB, CFR, CIF and DAP, with DDP outside the standard offer. Valencia and Barcelona are the deep-sea options and each is roughly a day's road haul; Algeciras serves as the transhipment alternative and Coslada as the rail route. If the term is still open in your own planning, what each Incoterm actually moves is worth reading before you ask for a figure, because the term decides most of what a comparison between two offers is really measuring.

How an enquiry turns into a load

Send the ranges rather than a reference list, with case or pallet quantities against each, the destination market and port, and the term you trade on. Add two things that are specific to this brand: whether sun care is in scope, and what your destination requires of the pack. Those two answers shape the offer more than the quantity does.

What comes back is a pro-forma naming the allocation, the pack presentation and market version, batch and dating position, pallet build and the documents the consignment can carry. Approve it and the load books against it; nothing ships against a number agreed elsewhere. Where the assortment cannot be filled as asked, we say which range to move rather than substituting quietly, because a pharmacy buyer discovering a substitution at goods-in has a listing problem, not a delivery problem. Supply is to trade buyers only — pharmacies, chains, distributors, importers, retail groups and re-exporters — and accounts open against company registration and VAT or the local equivalent. When the assortment is settled, put the range list in front of the desk with your port and the offer comes back within a business day.
