Two quite different kinds of line share this range. One is branded ambient grocery, produced in Europe and bought by SKU, where naming the product settles the specification. The other is commodity-like, where the product name tells you almost nothing and the specification does all of the work. Both travel on the same booking. They do not get quoted the same way.

Specifying the commodity half

An enquiry for an ingredient line that gives only a product name cannot be answered honestly. What is needed is grade or size, origin, the packing you want it delivered in, and the condition standard you are working to. Buyers who send that get a firm answer quickly; buyers who send a name get a list of questions back first, which costs a day nobody needed to spend. Branded grocery is the opposite: SKU, pack size and quantity, and it is priced against the same Incoterms and payment terms as everything else we ship.

Food is where the paperwork does the most work

Beyond the standard export set of commercial invoice, packing list, export declaration and transport document, a food consignment often needs a Certificate of Origin, EUR.1 where a preferential agreement applies between the EU and your country, and, depending on the destination, a health certificate or certificate of free sale issued at origin. These are arranged around the booking and are awkward to obtain retrospectively, so the requirement belongs in the first message rather than the last. Our documentation guide sets out what each one is for.

The cargo itself is undemanding. Ambient dry goods need no reefer and tolerate long transits, with two exceptions worth naming: humidity, which is a genuine risk on a tropical leg for anything hygroscopic, and pest exposure, which makes packaging integrity and container condition matter more here than in a cosmetics load. Tell us the destination country and port, the certificates your customs authority will ask for, and whether you are buying by case, pallet or container.
